Being that it’s Scoliosis Awareness Month, it’s worth taking a look at the incredible difference pediatric scoliosis surgery can make in the life of a child, helping them live a better quality of life free of pain and discomfort.
We’ll be using an example of a girl living with scoliosis. She preferred not to associate with other children nor was she into activities that children her age typically enjoy. The reason was her abnormally bent spine which besides affecting her appearance, also affected the way she walked and made her fear she would be made fun of. Her parents were unaware she was suffering from scoliosis until she was taken for a checkup. The parents had been lead to believe scoliosis surgery was unsafe which increased their apprehension.
After being counseled about scoliosis surgery and how it would improve their child’s life, the parents ultimately agreed to have the surgery performed. A week later, the child was living a normal life.
Scoliosis is usually easy to spine because of the curvature and the abnormal gait. There are other symptoms to look out for such as appearing to lean to one side, a shoulder appearing to be higher than the other, or a waist that looks uneven.
