In 2011, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. At 11 years old, I had a 45-degree angle develop in my spine. Three months later the degree had rapidly curved to 65 degrees, and I had to undergo surgery the next week. I Had a full spinal fusion procedure at Joe DiMaggio children’s hospital. It was an 11-hour surgery. The problem was never fixed, and in 2015 and 2016 I had to undergo two more surgeries to correct the problem. All three surgeries were with the same surgeon, but I am keeping his name confidential. I still wasn’t seeing any improvement in my posture and was never relieved of any pain.
My primary doctor from Holy Cross (Dr.Gill) recommended I go see Dr. Asghar. Dr. Gill talked very highly of Dr. Asghar commending his practice in correcting scoliosis patients. I was desperate to find answers, and my mother and I scheduled our first appointment with him in September. My mother and I met Dr. Asghar, and we were very impressed. He took his time explaining everything thoroughly and never rushed nor ditched any questions we had for him. He has a great sense of humor and is extremely sharp in what he does. I was stunned to find out I had developed kyphosis with my scoliosis. My questions were finally answered! Dr. Asghar was going to do my procedure, and it was scheduled for Nov 20, 2018. The days following up to the surgery I was put on a special diet by his team, and every time I came into the office they were so sweet and compassionate towards me as they understood my situation!
The day of the surgery I was so so nervous my mother told me “we can walk out now and not do it,” but I had faith and trusted Dr. Asghar. His surgical team came to check up on me in pre-op and made me smile with stories and jokes. They were very informative and listened to all of my concerns before going into the operating room. After the operation, I was in the ICU and was visited by Priscilla as well as Dr. Asghar and a few familiar faces I remembered in the operating room before going under. I was visited 2 times a day by Dr. Asghar, and when I wasn’t feeling so hot he went above and beyond to make sure I got the right medications. I was out of the hospital in 4 days! The day I left which was Saturday Dr. Asghar was very encouraging and motivated me to get up and get moving so I could go home as soon as possible. If it wasn’t for his encouragement that day, I probably would have stayed a couple more days! I am a completely different person after this operation I have grown 4 inches tall now and have better self-esteem in the way my body looks. I was also given the old screws and rods and a 3D model of my back by Dr. Asghar as a souvenir loved it!! Overall Dr. Asghar is the best orthopedic surgeon I have ever met and believe me when I say that anyone who has difficulty with their spine will have a completely new life. Many thanks to Dr. Asghar and his team.
Dr. Asghar met with me and answered EVERY question I asked. He spent a lot of time with us. He was compassionate and caring. He was not in a hurry to end my appointment. He was more concerned about determining that I would have an outcome that would improve my quality of life than they we about getting an order to do the surgery. Other surgeons said that my scoliosis surgery would take 2 days, 6 hours a day. Six hours after I was taken to the operating room, I was on my way to recovery. I am 6 weeks out and doing amazing. Some discomfort but no pain. All my pre-surgery pain is gone. I have some continued discomfort from the need to retrain my muscles. My future is bright and I see a more active life free from pain on the horizon. Much to the relief of my family and friends I can’t say enough about Dr. Asghar and Priscila and the office staff.
“Dr. Asghar has given me my life back, and I am so grateful to him and the staff at the Cantor Spine Institute.”
Dr. John Asghar performed my back surgery on January 22, 2019. Among other issues, I had degenerative scoliosis of my lumbar region, and little to no space between my last 5 lumbar vertebrae, which caused two nerves going to my left leg to be crushed.
I have always been an active person; I started roller blading in my 50’s. But as the years went by, I started having back issues that got worse and worse, to the point where I couldn’t even go to the grocery store without being in pain the whole time. I had to lean on the grocery cart to be able to do it. I could no longer go with my husband to walk our dog. I had constant pain in my left leg because of crushed nerves. I was being treated by a pain management doctor, who was administering epidurals every 10-12 weeks. Then the epidurals no longer helped. My doctor told me I should consider surgery. I visited 2 surgeons with my x-rays and MRI’s. Neither of them had anything to offer me other than a solution that didn’t address all my issues or a 8-10 hour fusion surgery and a long, painful recovery.
Then, by a stroke of good luck, my husband saw an ad in the newspaper for “Dinner with the Doctor” featuring Dr. Asghar, who specializes in correcting spinal deformities, at Holy Cross auditorium. When I saw that he was part of the Cantor Spine Institute, I was really encouraged. Dr. Cantor performed successful neck surgery on me in 2012, and I know his extremely high standards. After attending the presentation, I made an appointment to see Dr. Asghar. As soon as he spoke with me about my situation, I knew right away that he was the doctor I had been waiting for. His plan addressed all my issues. I left with hope for the first time in years. Not only is he a skillful, talented surgeon, he is a caring person.
My surgery took 3 1/2 – 4 hours; and, at Dr. Asghar’s recommendation, I spent a week at the wonderful John Knox rehab facility in Pompano Beach before going home. I have had minimal pain, and am recovering very quickly. A big plus is that I know I can confidently call Dr. Asghar’s P.A., Priscila, to address any questions or concerns and know that they will be responded to in a timely and caring manner. Yesterday, I ran errands with my daughter involving quite a bit of walking. Although I got tired, I was NOT IN PAIN!
At 24 years old, I had a spinal fusion surgery for my 75-degree progressive curve with Dr. Asghar. I am so very grateful for Dr. Asghar, Priscila and team. Dr. Asghar is very knowledgeable, passionate and confident about his work. His confidence is contagious; after contemplating with the spinal fusion surgery for over a decade, I felt relieved and confident when I scheduled the surgery after our first meeting. Also, Priscila supported me throughout the surgery and recovery process, and I am thankful for her patience, knowledge and kindness. So happy I finally went through with surgery and I do not have the pain I had pre-op. Thank you Team!
Last year we found out that our daughter would need surgery due to her scoliosis progression. My wife and I were anxious and devastated. We met with Dr. Asghar who I can truly say is an excellent doctor who puts his patients first. As you can imagine, we had many questions about the surgery. We met with him over an hour and he was very patient with us and at no time did he make us feel rushed with our many questions. He also made my daughter feel at ease with his humor while also building up her self esteem. Even after that first initial session, when we had more questions, he would take the time to answer them thoroughly. His demeanor is like no other doctor, and we felt confident that we had made the right choice as her surgeon. His pre and post-op guidance was amazing. Everything that he explained materialized as he had said. He was at the hospital real early the day after surgery, and even on Father’s Day he was there as well. He is not only a true professional and a skilled surgeon, but also a very sincere down to earth person. Thank you for taking such good care of my baby and making it a true wonderful Father’s Day gift for me. I am forever thankful and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him. My daughter at 7 weeks after surgery is doing what she loves the most, dancing once again. Thank you Dr. Asghar.
My husband is in the medical field and did his due diligence before my spinal fusion in 2011 to find the very best physician. Every doctor he knew said that Dr. Cantor is the best. And they were right. I am so thankful he was my surgeon. Not only did my surgery go flawlessly, the results exceeded my expectations. I have recently gone back for stenosis/bulging disc/compressed nerve at another location in my back. Rather than recommending immediate surgery, Dr. Cantor suggested we try a spinal epidural, performed by Dr. Giuffrida, in his office. Two injections later, I am almost pain free. I just can’t recommend Cantor Spine Institute highly enough.
About six weeks ago I developed a searing constant pain up and down my left leg. At the time, I was also having tremendous stress in my life as my hubby was in and out of hospital and rehab. I visited him every day in absolute agony. Finally was recommended to Dr. Anthony Giuffrida by my son, Rob, who was seeing an orthopedist at Holy Cross. After viewing the MRIs that I brought it was recommended that I try a pain medication. Took it for 10 days, pain abated a little but the searing pain was still in my lower foot and ankle. All this time I maintained an active life due to my situation. It was not fun. Dr. Giuffrida saw me for a second visit on Dec7, 2018. At that time he recommended further treatment which hopefully would alleviate the pain entirely. Believe it or not, am writing this the day after treatment, practically pain free which to me is a MIRACLE. The DR. and his ENTIRE STAFF are people of extraordinary know how, integrity, friendliness and caring. It is possible to fall in love with all of them! Now you know the rest of the story! Love you guys!
